Linky Loved

Miscellaneous April 25th, 2007

Taking a break from the usual recipes and food reviews, this is a post to share some linky love with some of my favourite food blogs that I visit often, some of whom are now considered “kitchen friends” or even “pork buddies”. I never thought that this blog could go so far as to have its own domain today but it is also a challenge as I am regularly asking my mum to dig deep into her memory for her home-cooked recipes. There are some coming eg. popiah, bak chang (rice dumplings), itik sioh etc and also those delicious cakes and kuehs which are my mother-in-law’s specialty. I will share with you some recommended food blogs and my reasons for them:- Read the rest of this entry »

Pork Leg Hoi Sin Stew

Pork, Dinner, Chinese April 19th, 2007

pork leg hoi sin stew

The one and only time I’ve tasted this Pork Leg Hoi Sin Stew (name given by myself) was during Chinese New Year when my mother-in-law cooked this. I was totally blown away by this dish as it is so delicious that even my 3 year old daughter was asking for seconds and third helpings. So, why is this dish so delicious? I mean, it is only pork leg stew!

Okay…the gravy is an interesting blend of sweet hoi sin sauce with salted plums. Add some dried chillies for spiciness and a touch of chinese cooking wine for the aroma. Stew it for at least an hour and you’ll get absolute melt-in-the-mouth layer of fat, smooth skin as well as soft and tender flavour infused meat. My! What a mouthful! Okay, it might sound that I was exaggerating but you’re missing out something really really tasty if you don’t try out this recipe! Read the rest of this entry »

Northern Indian Food at Restoran ABC

Food review April 16th, 2007

Work is just piling up :( and recently, I haven’t been cooking much (save and except sausages and eggs on toast). So, it if pleases you, may I re-release one of my food review archives to set you drooling!

My office is located along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Kuala Lumpur. Most of the food stalls, coffee shops and restaurants around here sell predominantly Malay and Indian cuisine. Not too long ago, there used to be a coffee shop (known as “kopitiam” here in Malaysia) near my office which is operated by a chinese owner and sells chinese food. The kopitiam has since closed as the owner of the building sold it off to somebody else. There goes our morning breakfast and tea joint.

It was replaced by a spanking new look restaurant and looks up-market. Today, my boss and I decided to give it a try and see if it is a worthy successor to our kopitiam. The new restaurant is simply named ABC (Always Best Choice). We have always noticed that the lunch time crowd is good.

Anyway, it is located on the ground floor of Selangor Mansion along the famous Jalan Masjid India. By the way, it is a corner lot, as you can see from the picture on the top left. A menu table is placed outside the restaurant for you to browse through and it states the prices as well. The pictures in the menu looks good and we decided to head in. Of by the way, there is also a friendly waiter outside the restaurant who greets you and opens the door for you. Read the rest of this entry »

Siew Pak Choy with Braised Mushrooms

Vegetable, Lunch, Chinese April 11th, 2007

siew pak choy mushrooms

Siew Pak Choy (in Cantonese) is one of my favourite vegetables as it is simple to cook and has the crispy texture I look for in vegetables. It can simply be blanched and flavoured with oyster sauce but I’ve decided to do something extra. In this recipe, I braise some shiitake mushrooms and pour the gravy over the siew pak choy to give it a more “classy” feel to this simple dish. A little bit of effort goes a long way to make a dish look and taste better.

This is my recipe for Siew Pak Choy with Braised Mushrooms Read the rest of this entry »
